Chocolate Startup Seeking Visual/Graphic Design Intern (Upper West Side, NYC) New York City

Published date: January 5, 2015
  • Location: Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

MUST BE ABLE TO WORK IN NYC. NO EXCEPTIONS.

To apply you must be in college or recently graduated (see more below).

Please email Rafael (email listed below) FROM YOUR .EDU email address (required) explaining why you are the right person for the role, why you are interested in it, and please send some designs you've created so we get an idea of your style. Don't worry about a professional portfolio (although that would be nice) and please DO NOT SEND A RESUME unless you have a REALLY good reason to send it (ie fellowship or nobel prize). We do need to know how many semesters you have left before graduating, however, or where you graduated from. We will not look at any applicants who do not email from the university email address (.edu) or attach a cover letter instead of using the email body.

No professional experience is required (although great if you have it) - we are looking for someone with an extremely strong eye for visual design and can create powerful/stunning imagery for our media campaigns (social, email, blog, etc.), and use this as an opportunity to build their portfolio, not just in the visual sense, but with hard data/results attached to it (how many shares, conversions, likes, follows, etc. from certain images/campaigns), which is very valuable for resumes.

Skills/experience with design specific software (ie photoshop) is NOT required - we have plenty of tools and apps that do a great job and you can even use the time to learn or fine-tune your skills with any particular software you feel like using/learning.

You will be on a team with two other interns - one handling social media and the other handling SEO. The team will work together to produce campaigns dictated and led by the founder. So you must be able to work well in a team and have good communication/interpersonal skills.

Ready for some chocolate?

Summary of Company:
DARK70 (dark70.com) is a dark chocolate club in which members receive a monthly box of dark chocolate, made by craft chocolatiers and is 70% or more cacao (dark70.com/70plus), based on their individual flavor profile.

DARK70 is more than that, however. It is a lifestyle brand focused around "healthy indulgence", which is why all the dark chocolate we source is made with at least 70% cacao and not made with Alkali. Many of the brands we source from also implement organic, non-GMO, and fair trade practices.

Duration of internship: Beginning of January - End of March (3 Months)
Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

Please note that this is an unpaid internship. Read more below about what is gained (ie you're not delivering coffee - more on that below).

Who Should Apply
Must be within last 3 semesters of graduating (or have graduated)

This internship is perfect for anyone who is interested in (in addition to visual design) chocolate, entrepreneurship, startups, and marketing (technical and creative). Anyone who likes being creative and seeing their ideas come to life while learning-by-doing with guidance from an experienced startup founder.

DARK70 is still new and at a very early stage, so this is a rare chance to work directly with a founder and see how a startup is built from the ground up. Very, very interesting and huge learning potential for anyone interested in this space. You will learn A LOT.

Unpaid - What you get out of it. Knowledge, learning, resume building, network.

Results & Resume
The internship will conclude with a final assessment, which is based on both quantitative and qualitative aspects. If desired, you will get one on one help with your resume and linkedin page.

Network & Jobs
You will have access to a very strong network within the startup and technology community, which is often one of (if not the) most important aspects of a professional career. A strong network is invaluable, and it is just one extra perk of this program.

If you love designing with a fresh canvas and lots of freedom with creativity (though with supervision and critique/feedback), and want to learn new things about startups and business, this is a great role.

Who Shouldn't Apply
If you are not in your last 3 semesters before graduation (if you graduated already that's fine, but must be within the last 12 months)

This is not the job for people who are not very creative or ambitious. Same goes for flexibility - if you are not someone that can handle a few tasks coming at you from different directions it may not be a good fit.

Contact info: rafaelb(@)dark70.com (don't forget the "b")

Thanks and best of luck.
