Published date: April 13, 2015
  • Location: Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States

The Boys Hope Girls Hope Boarding Program is a unique, private scholarship program seeking Residential Counselors to work with the dynamic youth participating in the long-term program to expand their horizons and graduate college. The youth are promising students who want to accomplish greatness but were previously impeded by their environments. We are seeking to hire one live-in Residential Counselor for our Boys Dormitory in Brooklyn and one live-in Residential Counselor for our Girls Dormitory in Brooklyn. We anticipate an August 1, 2015 start date.

The Residential Counselor provides the scholars, who are in grades 9-12, with frontline support, guidance and direction. Residential Counselors reside in the dorms from Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons and are responsible for the day-to-day activities and programs associated with BHGHNY scholarship and residence. They work closely with other staff to ensure that the goals and expectations of the program are being met in a thoughtful and consistent manner. Some Residential Counselors carry additional responsibilities that are specific to certain program areas and include admissions and outreach; academic programming and support; and special projects planning. These additional duties are outlined in supplemental forms.

Each staff member is responsible for working with a team to:

Guide and assist BHGHNY scholars with their day-to day responsibilities and to ensure that each scholar has the necessary structures and resources available to be successful in the classroom, and to become leaders in the dorm.
Maintain regular communication with scholars' parents, teachers and guidance counselors, and to assist in the planning/implementation of special dorm-related activities.
Supervise and monitor study periods and provide subject specific support in those areas where there exists the background to do so.
Prepare written reports detailing scholar preparation and growth and when needed, provide BHGH National with a log of periodic entries and observations regarding scholar growth and development.
Be responsible for daily room and building inspections, for coordinating community chores, and ensuring that the dorm is always tidy.
Attend all meals and when necessary, help in the overall meal preparation and subsequent serving of those meals.
Attend all scheduled staff meetings and are expected to communicate all scholar concerns to the Dean of Programs and Residential Life in a timely and appropriate manner.
Maintain a disciplined and supportive community of scholars and in so doing serve as an example that BHGHNY scholars can aspire to become.

Every Residential Counselor must possess a genuine passion for youth development and for BHGHNY's mission and core principles. A sense of humor, high-energy, the ability to multi-task and follow-through with planned activities are all a must. An undergraduate degree is required and prior experience working with youth in a residential setting is desired. Candidates must also: Demonstrate strong leadership and mentoring skills to guide students; Be socially conscious, inspiring and have high energy/enthusiasm; Be a self-starter, a problem solver and willing to take initiative; Have patience, mental endurance and an appreciation for the gratification that comes with helping disadvantaged youth go to college and flourish.

We encourage you to apply if you have experience and/or expertise in any the following areas: Math (all levels, especially Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), English and writing, youth development and mentoring, leadership training, community service planning, and youth program planning.
