ESL Teachers Needed for New Rochelle Teen Summer Program - (New Rochelle, NY) New Rochelle

Rennert Teens is hiring enthusiastic and creative ESL teachers to join our summer team.

Our Summer Plus! program, based on the campus of Iona College in New Rochelle, welcomes 13-17 year old students from around the globe. Through engaging English classes, our students become stronger communicators and get hands on experience in a topic of their choice. Our teachers are excited about finding new ways for students to progress: whether it's a debate on social media's impact on our lives, assembling a class cafe to practice ordering coffee, or presentations on festivals and traditions from students' home countries.

Our instructors teach 9:30 AM - 12:45 PM, Monday to Friday, two courses each morning: one 90 minute leveled General English class and one 90 minute mixed level elective class. The elective class is a project-centered elective course that allows students to study English through the following topics:

- Art & Design
- Sports
- Leadership
- Film (involves use of iMovie)
- Broadway
- Fashion

** Positions also available teaching only 1 elective per day (11:00 AM - 12:45 PM).

JOB DESCRIPTION

- Plan and execute engaging lesson plans for General English that incorporate reading, listening, speaking, and writing (with a focus on speaking) and are lively, challenging, and relevant to teen learners.
- Introduce and assess use of new vocabulary, functional language, and grammar through varied, student-centered, communicative methods.
- Teach English via the elective course, guiding students to explore the topic through discussion and hands on activities, culminating in one individual or class project per week.
- Complete weekly digital progress reports with feedback for each student, discussing progress and suggestions for improvement with students each Friday.
- Submit a daily lesson record to the Academic Manager with a log of activities completed and resources used.
- Communicate actively and frequently with fellow teachers and the Academic Manager, reporting student lateness, absence, issues, or grievances.
- Work with students and the Academic Manager to choose one elective class project for students to present at the Student Showcase and scaffold project completion during class time.
- Assist the Academic Manager with placement test proctoring and grading if necessary.
- Work with Rennert Teens residential staff as needed to communicate program announcements.
- Pitch in to help execute the academic program as necessary, demonstrating flexibility and a proactive nature in helping coworkers and students.

Classes are held at Iona College. Progress reports and lesson records are completed outside of class time (computers are available at school).

NOTE: this role is non-residential.

Classes run June 22 - August 7, with a staff training in Manhattan on Saturday, June 13th. While a commitment to the full duration of the program is required from our core team of teachers, shorter contracts are available.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Commitment to the Rennert Teens mission
- Bachelor's degree + 1 year ESL-specific teaching experience (6 months with youth preferred) OR Bachelor's degree + TESOL certificate or degree
- US work permit
- Respect for and dedication to working with teenagers of varied backgrounds
- Enthusiasm, flexibility, and patience
- Basic computer skills for completing and emailing progress reports
- Optional: teaching, work, or personal experience in one or more elective class topic
