As a founding staff member in our school's final year of grade-level expansion, you will collaborate with your colleagues to actively create a positive school culture and implement our mission to its fullest. There will often be the opportunity and necessity to take on a variety of roles in our growing community.


Our teachers are responsible for teaching subject area courses in the context of an interdisciplinary, sustainability-focused curriculum. Teachers use project-based methodology and design on-going fieldwork to enrich the units of study. As per our charter application, we use the following resources: Understanding by Design Backwards Planning, Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Connected Mathematics Project, Inquiry-based Approach to Science, and The Cloud Institute's Education for Sustainability Framework.


Teacher Commitments:
• Be an active participant to grow the school in a spirit that balances innovation with best practice.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design and implement common-core aligned curriculum and assessments and sustainability projects.
• Use diverse student data to design differentiated instruction to ensure that all students meet rigorous goals including English Language Learners and students with special needs.
• Integrate the explicit teaching of sustainability, reading comprehension, and original writing into all units of study across all content areas.
• Implement school-wide behavior systems that consider adolescent development including bi-monthly celebrations, logical consequences, restorative justice, and collaborative problem solving.
• Integrate technology into classroom activities, including the maintenance of course-related resources, online grade books and collaboration tools.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, students and families to design, implement and monitor support plans (behavior and academic interventions for individual students) through an online tracking system.
• Commit to lead activities that enrich, enhance and facilitate the academic and social goals of BUGS, including gardening and monthly field study outside of the building.
• Commit to serve as an advisor to 10-15 students. Advisors will serve as the advocate for students and support them with meeting their individual goals including the high school application process.


In addition to an interview, teacher candidates will present a teaching portfolio, which includes classroom assessments and rubrics, evidence of philosophy of education, evidence of curriculum planning such as course outline and lesson plans, and any teaching artifacts throughout their teaching career. Teaching artifacts may include student work, images of student work, learning environment and presentations, and evidence of teacher collaboration and/or leadership. Special education candidates should bring a copy of an IEP that they have created (or collaborated on). Please delete the name of the student and be prepared to discuss the IEP. Interview activities may include role plays, demo lessons, data analysis, and on-demand writing.
