Here we offer a set of 4 matching framed brilliantly colored chromolithographs from the 1878 Columbus Ohio edition of The Birds of America: Drawn & Coloured from Life by Jacob H. Studer & Co. The drawings were by Theodore Jasper, a German American illustrator and physician by profession, who pursued a life long interest in ornithology.

Originally published in 40 parts over a span of five years, this first edition was published in two volumes, illustrating some 700 species with superb chromolithographs. The work quickly achieved public acclaim and is published in facsimile right up to the present. It was one of the first books available for bird identification at a price that more could afford than the works of such artist as Audubon & Gould. The folio contains many beautiful illustrations "drawn and colored from life" by Thomas Jasper showing the different species and varieties of North American birds, with their habitat and characteristics.

The birds are artistically arranged on the page in their natural habitat in a universally appealing manner, with romantic & luminous backgrounds reminiscent of the great artists of the day, such as Moran. The quality of the chromolithographs is very fine, printed with a biscuit background. The frames measure 18.5 x 13.75-inches. The condition of each print is excellent, with the colors very bright and no foxing. The mats have some fading and the rear paper has been repaired on two of them. These are genuine antique treatments of antique prints from the first Studer edition, not later prints, and are about 125 years old.

The prints are:
XXXIV The Red-headed Duck (Male, Female, Young Male); and The Bobolink, or Rice-bird.
XLVI The Long-billed Curlew--Sickle-bill, The Willet, Semipalmated Tattler, or Stone Snipe; and The White-rumped Sandpiper.
LXII American Widgeon--Baldpate; Green-winged Teal; American Snipe--Wilson's Snipe; Long-billed, or Louisiana Water Thrush; Short-billed Water Thrush; Roseate Tern; Buff-breasted Sandpiper; Least Sandpiper; and Black-headed Turnstone.
LXXIII Red and White-shouldered Blackbird--Three-colored Tropial; Lewis' Woodpecker; Mexican Flicker, Red-shafted Flicker, Red-shafted Woodpecker; Anna Hummingbird; Yellow-billed Magpie; Common Cormorant--Shag; Red-breasted Snipe, Gray Snipe, Grayback; Northern Phalarope; and Cooper's Sandpiper.
