Tia, the cat:
Send all inquiries for Tia to Michelle at mayproject@mindspring.com
She gets along with dogs but doesn't seem okay with cats.
She is friendly on her own terms.
I don't think she can live with kids
Tia's owner had to leave the Country in a hurry.
She directed her employee to take care of her cat.
The employee found out she was allergic to cats.
Tia was alone in the apartment and damaging it.
Tia's owner instructed her employee to buy a big cage and to put Tia in it.
The employee did this then started to come every few days to feed Tia and change out the litter.
Tia's human was not able to come back.
She instructed her employee to continue this care until she was able to return.
Two and a half years later she still hadn't returned.
My friend learned about what was going on. She enlisted my help. We went over to Tia's apartment about 4 Saturdays ago. We found Tia in a big pink cage - about 6 ft tall by 3x3. She was matted with mattes that hung off her body 8 - 12 inches.
She was sweet until we tried to take her out of her cell.
With great struggle on both sides of the fence there was finally success.
We got her into a small dog cage. She hissed and growled and struck out at us down two flights of steps. The vets at Vinegar Hill in DUMBO were able to shave about 30% of the mattes off.
They checked her for feline aids and leukemia..all fine. General exam showed she was healthy. They gave her vaccinations and we left.
She has been living with a foster and his dog, Leo ever since.
The first week was very difficult. Tia lashed out, hissed and growled any time Craig came in the room. Tia did enjoying sitting in the window right away though.
Mary, from Tavi and Friends came over twice to practice touch with her and had success with helping her to calm down.
Bringing Tia out of Craig's apartment to get the rest of the mattes removed set back her progress a little. As of this morning, however, Craig reports that Tia will eat treats out of his hand! She still is occasionally hissing at him though.
All in all we are both happy with her progress!
I think she will need to go to a home without young kids. She is working through two and a half years of solitary confinement.
The vet thinks, Tia is about thirteen years old
