A new and exciting poetry workshop series for 10 individuals is starting up! Hopefully the following information will do for now.

About the workshops:
I'm looking to start an exclusive poetry writing workshop circle at a great attendance fee of $6 per 1 ½ to 2 hour weekly session (pay as you go!). It's designed for adults that are serious about learning to write poetry or microfiction and who enjoy meaningful conversations. Prior experience with poetry is not needed--just having a strong interest and willingness to write regularly will do. Indeed, I welcome anyone who never considered writing poetry at all for whatever reason(s). These workshops are low-pressure student-centered and to be supportive. I'm looking for sincere and kind individuals who will take an interest in the learning and well-being of others as well as their own. The group should start early March or possibly sooner. A time and public location in Queens or Manhattan that is accessible for everyone will be set once I have 10 people on board. An online format is also a possibility, but not my first choice.

About me:
In 1998 I received an MFA in creative writing from a highly regarded and competitive college program to go with a couple of other college degrees and certifications. I've also been the founding editor of two respected small press literary journals; produced and published chapbooks for others; continue to publish my own work in recognized poetry journals, and have been a featured reader in different shows and venues. My own teachers were amazing--nationally and internationally recognized as poets and teachers.

I would call myself a people's poet rather than an intellectual or academic poet; however, I've caught the education bug again and find myself doing post-MFA academic work: studying critical education, discourse analysis, and creative writing pedagogy; which leads me to my reason for starting this poetry circle. With public schools and colleges adopting evermore normative and restrictive curriculum practices that suck the life out of creating poetry, I'm not sure teaching in a formal academic setting is for me.
