NEW FRIENDS PRESCHOOL, located across the street from Central Park at W. 84th St., is a licensed nursery /preschool for children ages 1.5 to 4 years old serving the UWS since 2005. Set in a bright and cheerful home atmosphere, New Friends provides toddlers and preschoolers (2-4 yrs.) a gentle introduction to preschool routine with a balance of structure and learning through free play, individual and group activities. Younger children, 1.5 to 2 yrs., are welcomed into a safe, homey and nurturing atmosphere at New Friends providing a gentle transition between home and school and easing the separation process. In addition to introducing children to colors, shapes, letters, numbers and circle time/reading, our focus is on helping children over 2 develop self-confidence, cooperative social and verbal skills, respect for self and others, and stimulating curiosity and joy in learning about the world through art, reading, songs and science activities. Older 3's and 4's also practice writing letters and numbers, phonetics and word recognition in preparation for pre-K. With a small group of up to 8 children each day and low 1:3 teacher/child ratio, New Friends is uniquely able to customize age and developmentally appropriate activities for each child and provide all the personal attention, nurturing and guidance they need at this young age as they learn to make new friends and explore and discover the world around them. Daily nature walks and outings to our favorite playground in Central Park along with field trips to nearby attractions such as the Museum of Natural History, Children's Museum at the NY Historical Society, library and puppet shows at the Swedish Cottage in Central Park round out our daily activities. We offer morning (for under 2's) and full day schedules (9-2 pm) 2, 3 or 5 days per week, with school year and summer programs. Admissions are rolling throughout the year, space permitting.
